Canoe Landing
Douglas Coupland

Project Management

This 8-acre public park designed by Vancouver artist and author Douglas Coupland, in collaboration with landscape architects Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg (PFS Studio), features an earthwork-inspired topography and several sculptural vignettes referencing Canadiana - over-sized fishing bobbers, an iceberg, and a giant red canoe. There is also a beaver dam big enough for something prehistoric.

I sourced the beaver-chewed sticks from a dam I knew to be abandoned and shipped them to the artist’s studio where we spent the day figuring out how beaver dams are actually constructed by these industrious mammals. I also outlined the route for the Terry Fox Miracle Mile. Facilitating design and construction between landscape architect, contractors and multiple fabricators to see Douglas’ vision come to life was a truly exciting experience.
